When it's definitely worth it

• If you're into history and engineering: the site was built without mortar, stones fitting perfectly, on a ridge at 2,430 m. Seeing it in person hits harder than any photo.
• If you trek in (Inca Trail, Salkantay): arriving on foot through the Sun Gate at dawn is one of the strongest experiences South America offers.
• If you go early or in low season: with fewer people, the silence and morning mist make it feel like the photos that made you fall in love with it.

When it can disappoint

• If you go at midday in high season: with thousands of visitors circulating, it can feel more "theme park" than mystical.
• If you expect to wander freely: one-way circuits limit the route; you can't sit and contemplate wherever you want.
• If the budget stresses you out: train + ticket + guide + Aguas Calientes lodging adds up fast. If your budget is too tight, financial stress can overshadow the experience.

Our honest recommendation

If you can only go once in your life: it's worth it, period. No video or photo replaces standing in front of the citadel with the Andes behind it. But to maximize the experience:

3. Consider arriving on foot via Salkantay or the Inca Trail if you're fit enough — it completely changes the perspective.
