Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) Tour from Cusco
5,200 m.a.s.l. · Peru's most photographed mountain
Rainbow Mountain, known as Vinicunca in Quechua, is a one-of-a-kind geological formation in the Peruvian Andes: sedimentary layers of minerals (oxidized iron, copper sulfide, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate) that create natural stripes of red, ochre, turquoise, gold and green at 5,200 meters above sea level. It went viral in 2015 when the melting of the glacier exposed colors that had previously been hidden under snow. Today it is the most photographed attraction in southern Peru after Machu Picchu, with daily visits from Cusco (~3 hours by bus + 2 hours of hiking). The extreme altitude and steep trail make it a real physical challenge — but the landscape that greets you at the viewpoint makes every step worth it. We run this Full Day excursion with a 4:00 am departure from your hotel in Cusco.

What the Full Day tour is like
Departure at 4:00 am from your hotel in Cusco aboard a tourist bus. Breakfast in Cusipata (~6:30 am, an Andean community). Arrival at the trailhead in Phulawasipata (4,700 m.a.s.l., ~8:00 am). A 3 km uphill hike to the Vinicunca viewpoint (5,200 m.a.s.l., ~2h climbing slowly). 45 minutes of free time for photos. Descent back to the starting point (~1.5h). Buffet lunch in Cusipata (~2:00 pm). Return to Cusco (~6:00-7:00 pm). For those who cannot hike the whole climb, horses are available (US$25-30 one way), operated by members of the local community.
Altitude: what they DON'T tell you
Rainbow Mountain sits at 5,200 meters — higher than Everest Base Camp (5,150 m). At that altitude there is only about 50% of the oxygen available at sea level. Altitude sickness (soroche) affects even people in good shape. An absolute requirement: a minimum of 2-3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400 m) before this tour. If you arrived in Cusco from sea level only yesterday, do NOT go yet — wait at least 48 hours. Symptoms to watch out for: severe headache, nausea, dizziness, lack of coordination. Bring: water (2L), coca leaves, altitude sickness pills (Diamox if approved by your doctor), sugary snacks.
What to bring for Rainbow Mountain
Layered clothing (mornings at -5°C, midday up to 12°C, intense sun): thermal base layer, fleece, waterproof windbreaker jacket, thermal or trekking pants, wool socks, trekking shoes or boots with good grip, wool hat or wide-brimmed hat, light gloves, UV400 sunglasses (the snow reflects strongly). Sunscreen SPF 50+ (altitude reduces the natural UV filter), SPF lip balm. A small backpack with water (2L), energy snacks (chocolate, nuts, bars), coca leaves or coca candies, a camera with a spare battery (the cold drains batteries fast), your passport (it is requested at the community entrance), and cash in soles for a horse or souvenirs.
Alternative: Palccoyo (Rainbow Mountain II)
If the altitude or the strenuous hike worries you, Palccoyo is an excellent alternative: three multicolored mountains in the same region but at a lower altitude (4,900 m.a.s.l. vs 5,200), a much shorter and flatter hike (~30 min vs 2h), far fewer tourists (Vinicunca receives 1,500 visitors/day, Palccoyo only around 200), and scenery that is just as stunning with three viewpoints. A Full Day tour to Palccoyo from Cusco costs about the same as Vinicunca (US$80-95) and is ideal for families with children, older travelers or visitors with no time to acclimatize. Danfer Tours operates both options.
