Machu Picchu Tickets Sold Out: What to Do If There Are No Spots

You logged into TuBoleto, picked your date and everything shows zero. Don't panic: sold-out tickets online don't mean your Machu Picchu trip is over. As a local agency in Cusco, here are the real options left and the order in which to try them.

First: check what exactly is sold out

Machu Picchu doesn't have just one ticket, but several circuits and time slots. Often what sells out is the most popular circuit or the morning slot, while others still have space. Before giving up:

  • Try other circuits. If Circuit 2 (the classic one) is full, check 1 or 3. We explain what you see on each in Machu Picchu tickets and circuits.
  • Try other times. Afternoon slots usually sell out after morning ones.
  • Shift your visit by a day. If you're staying in Aguas Calientes, visiting a day earlier or later often solves everything.
  • Check again. Since September 2026, tickets can no longer be "held" without paying, so the system releases spots that used to stay blocked.

The most common fallback: in-person sales in Aguas Calientes

The Ministry of Culture keeps a quota of tickets sold in person in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), at the Cultural Center near the main square. In 2026 it was around 1,000 tickets a day, usually for visiting Machu Picchu the next day.

What you need to know:

  • You must be in Aguas Calientes the day before your visit, with your original passport.
  • There's a line, and in high season it starts very early. Opening hours change, so confirm them before you go.
  • You can't choose like online: you buy whatever circuit and time is left that day.
  • There's no guarantee. On busy dates it sells out too.

That's why this option only works if your itinerary includes at least one night in Aguas Calientes. A Full Day from Cusco leaves no margin. The best fit is the 2 days 1 night tour or, even better, the 3 days 2 nights tour, which gives you two chances.

Other options that work

Book with an agency before it sells out

The best way not to miss out is not to be late. When you book ahead, the agency buys your tickets as soon as there's availability and sends you the confirmation. If you're traveling in 2027, see when 2027 tickets go on sale.

Do a trek that ends at Machu Picchu

Routes like the Salkantay Trek end in Aguas Calientes. You still need a ticket to the citadel, but a multi-day itinerary gives you time to buy it in person.

Change your travel dates

If you haven't bought flights yet, moving your trip by a few days can be the simplest fix. April, May and November usually have more availability than July and August. More in the best time to visit Machu Picchu.

What not to do

  • Don't buy tickets from resellers or on websites other than the official one or an agency you know. The ticket is issued in the visitor's name with their passport: if the name doesn't match, you don't get in.
  • Don't buy train and hotel before you know there's a ticket, unless you plan to use the in-person sale and accept the risk. Train tickets and entrance tickets can't be changed to another date.
  • Don't trust "I'll get you a ticket at the gate." No tickets are sold at the Machu Picchu entrance.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if Machu Picchu tickets are sold out?

First check other circuits and time slots. If there's nothing, the most common option is the in-person sale in Aguas Calientes, which requires staying there the night before your visit.

How many tickets are sold in Aguas Calientes?

In 2026 it was around 1,000 tickets a day, usually for the next day. The number may change depending on the Ministry of Culture.

Can I buy tickets at the Machu Picchu gate?

No. No tickets are sold at the citadel entrance. They're only sold on TuBoleto or at Ministry of Culture sales points.

Is it safe to buy tickets from resellers?

No. Each ticket is issued in the visitor's name and checked against their passport, so a resold ticket in someone else's name won't work.
