It's one of the most common questions from independent travelers. Short answer: it depends on the circuit you choose, it's not a universal yes or no.

Circuits that require a mandatory guide

Some circuits, especially those including the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain climbs, require entry accompanied by a guide authorized under Ministry of Culture rules, mainly for safety on technical stretches.

Circuits where you can go without a hired guide

Other citadel circuits allow entry without a mandatory guide — you can buy the ticket and walk it on your own, following the assigned circuit's signage.

What you miss out on going without a guide

Even where it's legal, going without a guide means:

• Not understanding the meaning of the temples, terraces and structures (see our symbols and history guide).
• Not being able to ask questions on the spot.
• Missing details only a locally trained guide knows (astronomical alignment, building techniques, etc.).

How to plan an independent visit

1. Buy the official ticket in advance (Ministry of Culture or authorized agency), choosing a circuit without a guide requirement if you prefer to go alone.
2. Check whether your chosen circuit requires a guide before buying — rules change by season sometimes.
3. Arrange train and bus separately if going fully independent, or just the entry if you prefer a private guide without a full package.

1. Machu Picchu entrance ticket (depending on the circuit and your nationality).
2. Transport from Cusco to Ollantaytambo (bus or shared van) and back.
3. Train Ollantaytambo–Aguas Calientes, round trip.
4. Bus up and down to the citadel.
5. Hotel in Aguas Calientes if you stay a night.
6. A guide, if your circuit requires one or if you want to understand what you see.

Step by step for an independent visit

If you decide to go on your own, this is the order we recommend:

1. The entrance ticket first: it's what sells out fastest. Pick the date, circuit and time slot. Check the circuits in our ticket guide.
2. Then the train, with a schedule that gets you to Aguas Calientes with plenty of time before your entry.
3. Next the hotel, if you're sleeping in Aguas Calientes.
4. Finally the bus to the citadel, bought in Aguas Calientes.
5. Print or download everything: mobile signal is patchy.

Typical mistakes when going without a tour

• Buying the train before the entrance ticket and finding no space left that day.
• Getting the timing wrong: between the train arrival, the bus line and the ride up, 1-2 hours go by easily.
• Not bringing the original passport used to buy the ticket.
• Walking the circuit without context and leaving without understanding what you saw.
