Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): the Complete Guide to the Mountain of 7 Colors

In less than a decade, Rainbow MountainVinicunca, or the Mountain of 7 Colors — became Cusco's second most-visited attraction after Machu Picchu. Its bands of color — red, ochre, turquoise, lavender — were created by minerals deposited over millions of years and revealed by melting ice. But this is a destination at 5,036 m (16,522 ft): the highest altitude most travelers will ever reach. This guide shows you how to visit it well — and without suffering.

Where is it, and what exactly is it?

Vinicunca sits in the Vilcanota mountain range, about 3 hours by car southeast of Cusco, in the district of Pitumarca. The viewpoint summit is at 5,036 m (some measure 5,200 m at the highest point). The colors come from minerals: iron oxide (reds), chlorite (greens), calcium sulfate (whites). It was snow-covered until ~15 years ago; glacial retreat exposed it.

How to get there

There is no practical public transport — you visit on a Full Day tour from Cusco:

  • Departure 4:00–4:30 am from Cusco by bus.
  • ~3 hours to the village of Pitumarca / Phulawasipata (trailhead).
  • Breakfast on the way.
  • 1.5–2 hours hiking up (5 km) to the viewpoint, plus 1–1.5 h back down.
  • Return to Cusco between 5 and 7 pm.

See our Rainbow Mountain tour.

The real difficulty (be honest with yourself)

The hike is not technical — it is a wide trail with a moderate slope — but altitude changes everything. At 5,000 m you breathe half the oxygen you get at sea level. Walking 100 meters can leave you gasping. Keys:

  • Walk very slowly, short steady steps.
  • Stop to breathe every few minutes without guilt.
  • Hydrate and chew coca leaves.
  • If you run out of steam, horses (US$30–40 round trip) can carry you almost to the final viewpoint.

Non-negotiable: acclimatize at least 2 days in Cusco before coming. Do not do Rainbow Mountain the day you fly in from Lima. Read our altitude sickness (soroche) guide.

Vinicunca vs Palccoyo vs Pallay Punchu

There are three "rainbow mountains," and the differences matter:

MountainAltitudeHikeCrowdsBest for
Vinicunca5,036 m1.5–2 h upHighThe classic, most intense colors
Palccoyo4,900 m30–45 min, nearly flatLowFamilies, anyone worried about altitude
Pallay Punchu4,700 m45 min, steepVery lowAdventurers, the "shark-fin" formation

If altitude or crowds worry you, Palccoyo is the best alternative: the same colors, a far easier walk and almost no people.

Best season to go

  • May to September (dry): clear skies, most vivid colors, no mud. The best window. Expect brutal cold at dawn (−5 to 0 °C at the top).
  • October to April (rainy): risk of fog hiding the colors and of snow covering the mountain (the colors vanish under white). If you go in these months, target rain-free days.

What to pack

  • Layered clothing: thermal base + fleece + waterproof windbreaker (the weather flips in minutes).
  • Beanie, gloves and a buff for the freezing dawn.
  • UV400 sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen: at 5,000 m the sun burns brutally.
  • Trekking boots or shoes with good grip.
  • 2 liters of water, snacks (chocolate, nuts), coca leaves or candies.
  • Cash in soles (restrooms, horse, trail snacks).
  • A rain poncho in the wet season.

Final tips from a local guide

  • Book the first departure: leaving early beats the midday fog and the mass groups.
  • Do not underestimate the altitude: you will be nearly as high as Everest Base Camp (5,150 m).
  • Sequence it wisely: ideal after Humantay Lake (4,200 m) as an altitude progression. See Humantay Lake.
  • Traveling with kids or older adults? Choose Palccoyo.

Frequently asked questions

How high is Rainbow Mountain?

The Vinicunca viewpoint sits at 5,036 meters (16,522 ft) above sea level, higher than Everest Base Camp. It is the highest altitude most travelers will reach in Cusco.

How hard is the hike?

The trail itself is not technical: 1.5 to 2 hours of moderate uphill walking. The altitude is what makes it tough, with half the oxygen of sea level. If you get exhausted, horses are available for US$30–40 most of the way up.

When is the best time to go?

May to September (dry season): clear skies and vivid colors. In the rainy season there is a risk of fog or snow covering the colors.

Do I need to acclimatize first?

Yes: spend at least 2 days in Cusco before this tour. Never do it the same day you arrive from Lima — altitude sickness can ruin your trip.
