How Much Does a Trip to Machu Picchu Cost in 2026? The Real Budget
How Much Does a Trip to Machu Picchu Cost in 2026? The Real Budget
It is the question travelers ask Danfer Tours the most: "How much does it really cost to get to Machu Picchu?" And I get the doubt, because online you will find figures from 60 dollars to thousands, with nobody explaining what each number includes. Here, as a local guide who lives in Cusco, is the honest, itemized breakdown so you can build your budget with no surprises.
What you actually pay to reach Machu Picchu
You do not get to Machu Picchu "directly" from Cusco. It is a chain of costs that add up: transport to Ollantaytambo or Hidroeléctrica, train or trek, the shuttle bus up, the entry ticket and — if you want to understand what you are looking at — a guide. Concept by concept, with 2026 prices.
The Machu Picchu entry ticket
The foreigner ticket costs about S/152 (around US$41) for the most common circuit. Cheaper and pricier circuits exist depending on what they include (Huayna Picchu or the Mountain push it to S/200+). Peruvians pay less, around S/64. Important: tickets are sold online and sell out in high season, so book weeks ahead. Details in my guide on how to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco.
The train
The train is the cost that varies the most. A one-way ticket between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes runs US$70 to US$170 depending on the service (Expedition, Vistadome or the luxurious Hiram Bingham, which goes into the hundreds). Round trip, plan on US$140–340 per person. To save money, the Hidroeléctrica route replaces the train with a van plus a hike and slashes the cost.
The shuttle bus (Consettur)
From Aguas Calientes to the citadel there are 400 vertical meters of switchbacks. The Consettur bus costs US$24 round trip for foreigners (about US$12 each way). You can walk up for free, but it is ~90 minutes of steep stairs; many ride up and walk down.
The guide
An official guide at the citadel costs US$30 to US$60 depending on private vs shared and the language. Not mandatory, but I promise you: Machu Picchu without a guide is just pretty stones; with one, you grasp the history, the Inca astronomy and why the place takes your breath away.
Three budgets for Machu Picchu and Cusco (per person)
Here is the heart of the article: three realistic profiles for a Machu Picchu-centered trip plus a couple of days in Cusco. Approximate amounts in US dollars per person.
| Item | Backpacker | Standard | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Machu Picchu ticket | US$41 | US$41 | US$55 |
| Train round trip | US$0 (Hidroeléctrica) | US$160 | US$340 |
| Transport/van | US$40 | US$30 | US$0 (included) |
| Consettur bus | US$0 (on foot) | US$24 | US$24 |
| Guide | US$15 (shared) | US$30 | US$60 (private) |
| Hotels (2 nights Cusco + 1 Aguas Calientes) | US$60 | US$180 | US$450 |
| Meals (4 days) | US$48 | US$100 | US$220 |
| Extra tours (Sacred Valley, etc.) | US$35 | US$80 | US$200 |
| Approx. total | US$239 | US$645 | US$1,349 |
What each profile means
Backpacker: you go via Hidroeléctrica, sleep in hostels, eat local set menus (S/12–18 for lunch) and walk up. Physically tough but entirely doable. Machu Picchu can cost you under US$250 all-in.
Standard: the trip I recommend to most people. Expedition or Vistadome train, comfortable 3-star hotels, shared guide and an extra tour. The sweet spot between comfort and price.
Premium: luxury train, boutique hotels, private guide and door-to-door transfers. If you have few days and want everything to flow effortlessly, this is yours.
The shortcut: an all-inclusive Full Day tour
If you would rather not assemble every puzzle piece yourself, a Machu Picchu Full Day tour costs US$380–450 per person and bundles transport, train, Consettur bus, entry ticket and guide into a single day from Cusco. It is the most convenient option and the choice of travelers short on time. See our options on our tours page or learn more on the Machu Picchu destination page.
Costs people forget to budget
Beyond Machu Picchu, small costs add up:
- Cusco Tourist Ticket: S/130 (foreigners) if you will visit Sacsayhuamán, the Sacred Valley and other sites. Nearly indispensable — see the Tourist Ticket guide.
- Tips: customary for guides and drivers; plan US$5–10 per day.
- Water, snacks and minor entries: S/30–50 a day.
- Acclimatization: arrive 1–2 days early in Cusco (3,400 m). Not a big cost, but those extra hotel nights count.
- Lima–Cusco domestic flights: US$80–200 round trip depending on dates.
How to spend less without ruining the experience
After years accompanying travelers, my tips for stretching the budget:
- Travel in shoulder season (April–May or September–October): good weather, friendlier prices. See my guide to the best time to visit Machu Picchu.
- Book ticket and train early: the cheap services sell out first, leaving you the expensive ones.
- Stay longer in Cusco: spread out costs like the guide and transport by joining groups. With a week, check my 7-day Cusco itinerary.
- Eat where locals eat: a set lunch costs a fraction of a tourist restaurant.
So, how much do I need in total?
For a 4-day trip centered on Machu Picchu and Cusco, a realistic per-person budget is: US$240–300 backpacker, US$600–750 standard, and US$1,300+ premium. Add your flights and any extension to the Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake.
What matters is that you now have the real numbers to decide — not inflated figures from blogs that never set foot in Cusco.
