Palccoyo: the Rainbow Mountain Alternative Without the Crowds
Palccoyo: the Rainbow Mountain Without the Crowds
Everyone knows Vinicunca, the famous Rainbow Mountain. But few know there is an easier alternative, with far fewer people and — for many — just as impressive: Palccoyo. If altitude sickness worries you or you would rather not hike three hours among crowds, this is your place.
TL;DR — The short answer
- Palccoyo = the easy version of the rainbow mountain.
- Short walk: 30–45 minutes, nearly flat (vs. Vinicunca's demanding 3 h).
- Far fewer people and often better prices.
- Bonus: three colored ridges + a "stone forest."
- You are still very high (~4,900 m): acclimatize first.
Palccoyo vs Vinicunca: the honest comparison
| Palccoyo | Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) | |
|---|---|---|
| Hike | 30–45 min, nearly flat | 3–4 h round trip, demanding |
| Max altitude | ~4,900 m | ~5,036 m |
| Crowds | Few | Many |
| Extra attraction | 3 colored ridges + stone forest | The iconic viewpoint |
| Best for | Families, limited time, avoiding exertion | Those who want "the" famous mountain |

Why choose Palccoyo
- The walk is tiny. At nearly 5,000 m, walking little is an enormous luxury. The altitude hits far less.
- You go at your own pace. No lines, no Vinicunca-style human tide.
- Three for one. Palccoyo offers several colored slopes, not a single lookout.
- The stone forest. Vertical rock formations that look like another planet, unique to this area.
When to go
The best window is the dry season (May to September): clear skies and crisp colors. In the rainy season the track can get muddy and snow sometimes covers the colors. Check Cusco's weather month by month before fixing a date. Whatever the month, leave early: afternoon clouds tend to cover the summits.
What the day looks like
It is a full-day trip from Cusco. You leave before dawn (hotel pickup usually included), drive a long stretch to the Checacupe/Palccoyo area, stop for breakfast, then take the short walk to the lookouts. Back in Cusco by late afternoon. Bring warm layers, sunscreen, water and some cash for entries or restrooms.
The altitude: do not underestimate it
You walk little, but you are still at nearly 4,900 m — higher than many Alpine summits. Arriving acclimatized is key: spend at least two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley first, and read our guide to preventing altitude sickness. Precisely because of its short walk, Palccoyo is the best rainbow-mountain option for anyone who struggles with altitude or travels with children or older adults.
Vinicunca or Palccoyo?
- Choose Vinicunca if you want the iconic mountain from the photos and a hard high-altitude hike does not scare you.
- Choose Palccoyo if you value comfort, fewer people and a more relaxed day without giving up the colors.
Both are spectacular; there is no wrong choice, only the one that fits you.
